NAIDOC Week

On Friday afternoon, the school gathered to commemorate NAIDOC Week. National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2024 National NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’. We recognise the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders have played and continue to play across every generation. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders hold the stories that make up the oldest living culture in the world, and NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. Congratulations to our Year 6 students for thoughtfully leading us in our liturgy.

The past week has provided many invaluable, important experiences for our school community to continue educating and embracing the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have maintained ongoing spiritual and cultural connections to the land and sea for over 65 000 years.

A learning experience for our Prep students began with walking the St Stephen’s Way. They engaged in an Acknowledgement of Country at the Meeting Place, then collected items from our natural environment such as leaves and sticks. Back in the classroom, they used these nature items to make an echidna. Thank you to our teachers for providing a range of developmentally appropriate learning experiences for our students throughout the week.
