Athletics Carnival - Cancellation
Unfortunately, because of the heavy rains we have experienced
recently, we have had to make the decision to postpone our
Athletics Carnival. Our beautiful oval is looking very green but very
waterlogged, as is Col Bennett Park, where we were hoping to
conduct our Long Jump and 200 metre trials.
Official Opening
Below you will find an invitation to attend the Official Opening of Stage 4 of our building program on
Monday, 27 July. The Official Opening will begin at 7.30am with breakfast, thanks to
the generous sponsorship of LJ Hooker, Algester. This breakfast is
available for our parents and invited guests. Students will be
supervised on the oval by staff of Kidsport, who will be providing a
range of physical activities from 7.30am. Children will be provided
with fresh fruit during the activities, after which they will be walked
up to our Undercover Area to participate in the formal blessing and
ceremony, scheduled to start at 8.30am.
Reporting
Thank you to the many parents who attended our Showcase
yesterday afternoon. It was a wonderful display of a huge variety of
achievements—the product of a semester’s enthusiastic work and
efforts of our children and staff. Thank you to our children and
teachers for the very impressive exhibitions in our classrooms,
Music room and Library.
Eat Well Be Active Program
Parents and Friends of St
Stephen’s School are invited to
attend the official opening of the
Eat Well Be Active Program.
The opening will be held in our
UCA, overlooking our school oval
Friday 24th July at 8.00am.
Minister Karen Struthers will
open our program, as the
representative of Queensland
Government, who provided
$25,015. Click here to view the Program Timetable and Details
Religious Education News
This Friday evening (5pm & 7pm) and Saturday
afternoon (1pm & 3pm) many
children from St Stephen’s
community will be receiving
the sacrament of
Confirmation.
Confirmation is one of the
seven sacraments through
which Catholics pass in the process of their
religious upbringing. In this sacrament they receive
the Holy Spirit and are enriched with a special
strength. Hence, as true witnesses of Christ we
become more obliged to spread the Word of God
through our words and actions.
This weekend, let us keep these students in our
prayers.
Garden Project Update
This term Year 4 students have been
learning about vegetable gardens. We have
been researching no dig vegetable gardens
(or raised garden beds) on the computers.
We have discovered:
• the benefits of growing a vegetable garden;
• where to grow a vegetable garden;
• what things we need in order to grow
one;
• how to grow a vegetable garden and
what order the layers go in.
Each of us in 4N and 4C wrote a letter to
the administration team asking if we
could grow a vegetable garden at school. We
put a request in the newsletter to ask for
any spare gardening tools. We collected
foam boxes, newspapers and milk cartons.
The P&F gave us some money to build our
gardens. We wrote a letter and asked other
classes if they wanted to be involved in
our vegetable garden. Each grade chose
something to grow. Last Thursday we put
the layers in the sleepers for the vegetable
gardens. By Lochlan (4N)

Library News
The St Stephen’s Scholastic Book Fair is sadly finished
for another year. Thank you to all members of the St
Stephen’s community for contributing to the Book
Fair’s success. During this last week, I have enjoyed
watching the children, with their parents and
grandparents, making well-considered selections of
books and I know the lucky winners of the ten dollar
gift vouchers enjoyed spending their unexpected
winnings. The St Stephen’s library takes a
percentage of the total takings from the Book Fair in
cash and this money will be put towards purchasing
a class set of dictionaries for the upper primary
classes. Thank you again for your support!
Congratulations to Mrs Wigan and Year 5W who
have set themselves the goal of covering one
hundred books by Book Week. They have started
in a small way by finishing a total of a dozen books,
but we are looking forward to bigger things next
term. Thank you, Year 5W.
Cultural Dress Day
We, the school captains of St Stephen’s, are planning to hold a cultural
dress day to celebrate National Refugee Week this Wednesday, 24 June. This
means that if you or your ancestors have come from a different country, you
are invited to wear your national dress. If you and your family were born
in Australia, please come in free dress, but try to make your clothes as
colourful as possible.
We ask you to bring a donation of some gold coins to help our Mission
Project. Emily-Jane & Corey. School Captains
